The Enhanced Canopy was a deferred component of the Terminal 1 Redevelopment, Boarding Area B at San Francisco International Airport.
The design of this green roof draws inspiration from its surroundings on a variety of scales. The new Boarding Area B architecture, the airport as a whole, and the greater ecology of the South San Francisco Bay and Coastline all come together to inform the aesthetics of this design. Vibrant succulents and plants native to the California coast create a seasonal tapestry across a canvas of geometric watersheds, the bright foliage in contrast to the elegant grey architecture and roof surfacing.
The triangular motif plays on hidden drainage patterns as well as reflects the vernacular salt pond context. The tilted planes catch shadows and highlight the subtle topography. This is a design meant to be visually enjoyed from all angles to create an intriguing foreground and connection for viewers as they gaze toward San Bruno Mountain, as part of the airport’s architectural fabric from the upper level, and as a splash of color from a plane’s eye view.
